Hendrix Mine In The Making

Artist’s Conception of Hendrix Preparation Plant and Facilities.

In order to maintain the required production of Cavalier Coal, Consol is planning to open a new mine on Rockhouse Creek near Deane, Kentucky. This mine will be known as Hendrix Mine named in honor of Arthur Ray Hendrix, first Consol (Ky.) mine employee to be killed in World War II. The Chesapeake & Ohio and the Louisville & Nashville railroads have completed tracks to this mine. A new preparation plant, being built by Roberts and Schaefer Company, has already begun taking shape. Completion of this preparation plant is scheduled for September of this year. Plant capacity will be approximately 4000 tons per day on 3-shift basis with all sizes being washed, sized, de-watered and the fine sizes heat dried.

The contour method of mining will be employed at Hendrix Mine for several years along with deep mine development. Plans and projections have been made and openings are being started to get five sections ready to produce coal when the preparation plant is finished. Codell Construction Company has the contract to do tram road grading, install drainage structures and “face up” the mine openings along approximately one mile of outcrop. This contract should be completed in May of this year. Panel belt entries will be driven in 300 to 400 feet to allow conveyor and fan to be installed and rooms started. Coal mined from these entries will be loaded as run-of-mine until the preparation plant is finished.
