In the picture above the small house at left was the Post Office during the 1930’s and 1940’s. The bigger house at the right was the home of Lorenza Dow Coleman and Alaphare Puckett Coleman.

The picture above is showing the same area as in the photo above it. This house was built just to the left of the old post office. Stewart & Lola Allen England owned it until they died. Floyd Blankenship Jr. owned it until April 2015 when it burned to the ground.

Alaphare & Lorenzo Dow Coleman. They operated the Post Office from 1909 – 31 May 1941.

Loranza Dow Blankenship a Paw Paw, Kentucky resident is standing in Stewart & Lola Allen England’s yard. The house behind him was the home of Lorenza Dow (Dodge) Coleman. Dow lived on Mill Fork Rd. about three to four hundred feet to the left of this house. I believe Loranza Dow B. was named after Lorenza Dow Coleman.

In Sept. 2, 1952, Lorenzo Dow (Dodge) Coleman’s next-door neighbor Lola Allen England wife of Stewart England a granddaughter of Daniel Boone Coleman became the Postmistress. She didn’t have the job but a short while when Margaret Faith Coleman Daugherty d/o Dodge & Alaphare took over on April 15, 1952. The Post Office was moved into a smaller building just a short distance up the road from the one beside of Lorenza Dow (Dodge’s) home where he worked. It was across the narrow creek on the right. You had to walk across a short footbridge from the road to the door of the building to get inside. This is a photo of that postoffice building after it was moved down a little further in the bottom. Margaret is sitting on the ground.

Margaret retired Oct 9, 1964. Here is a picture of Margaret with her husband Mahlon Daugherty.
Alaphare’s maiden name was Puckett. She was born in Bradshaw, McDowell County, West Virginia. Lorenza Dow (Uncle Dodge) was born in Paw Paw, Pike County, Kentucky. He died 21 Jun 1957.
Margaret was their third (3rd) child. She married 1st Hiram Mahlon Daugherty, 2nd Frank Blankenship and 3rd John Henry Estep. Frank was a 1st cousin 1x removed to Loranza Dow Blankenship. Margaret & Mahlon had 11 children.
From the first Postmaster, Daniel Boone Coleman, October 4, 1878 to 1990 when Peggy E. Blankenship Jessie was forced to retired. The people of Paw Paw no longer had the convenience of walking to the Post Office to pick up their mail or to send mail out. The new Post Office address was changed to Phelps, KY. Paw Paw is no longer considered to be a town/city. But you can still find it on maps online.
Peggy Ellen Blankenship Jessie was Postmistress from October 10, 1964-1990. She was the daughter of Loranza Dow Blankenship pictured above. Her mother was Callie Lillie Virginia Ward Blankenship. Loranza Dow was a half brother to 3 siblings of Lorenza Dow (Dodge) Coleman.

Peggy’s assistant, Sandra Kay Dotson Scarberry.

Peggy alone and the second photo is Peggy and a friend, Carole. It shows part of the newer building that was supposed to be a larger, upgraded Post Office. She had received a letter from the government instructing her to have the new building built in order to meet the new standards required to keep the P.O. open. The letter stated that she had a time limit to build the new building and that she would be reimbursed. She borrowed money from a bank and had it built and then she contacted them. Instead of the government installing all new boxes, etc as they had stated in the letter she received another letter telling her that they were closing the P.O. permanently, forcing her into early retirement. She fell into a depression over the following years. Alzheimer’s took her life at the end of Jan 2007.
